Start with board certification
The single most important credential is certification by the American Board of Plastic Surgery (ABPS). It confirms years of dedicated surgical training and rigorous examination specific to plastic surgery — not a weekend course. Dr. Guarda has been ABPS certified since 2002 and re-certified in 2012 and 2022.
Look for experience with your procedure
Ask how often the surgeon performs the procedure you’re considering, and whether they handle both cosmetic and reconstructive cases. Breadth of experience often translates into better judgment and more natural results.
Notice how you’re treated
A good consultation feels like a conversation, not a sales pitch. You should feel heard, never rushed, and comfortable asking questions. If you feel pressured toward a bigger procedure, consider that a red flag.
Questions worth asking
- Are you certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery?
- How many times have you performed this procedure?
- Where is the surgery performed, and is the facility accredited?
- May I see results relevant to my goals?
- What does recovery really look like?
Choosing a surgeon is a personal decision. Trust your instincts, do your homework, and choose someone whose priority is a natural result and your long-term wellbeing.
